Characters · The Lower City
Ben is the quiet center of The Lower City — a withdrawn young man in his mid-twenties who works, eats, and moves through the crowded canyon of the Lower City without ever looking up. The way up is open to him; he simply never takes it.
He’s not unkind. He asks the old woman if she’s alright, offers the boy his food, says “go home” gently. But every small opening to connect, he lets pass. Ben watches things — a flame, the water, the beams of light — more than people. His pilot is a deliberate anti-arc: he ends the day in the same bed, in the same amber-grey light, unchanged. What moves is left to the viewer.
