Episode Breakdown — S1E01: The Lower City

Episodes · Pilot

Logline: One ordinary day, waking to sleeping, on the lowest levels of a vertical city — a life Ben could leave, and never does.

The Setup

The pilot deliberately withholds a conventional plot. We follow Ben from the moment he wakes through a single day of work, food, and small errands — a string of brief, oblique encounters where no one quite connects. It runs in two parts with an intermission, and closes by rhyming exactly with its opening shot.

Scene Flow

Part One — morning into midday:

  1. Apartment — he wakes to an alarm that isn’t his.
  2. Kitchen — the stove clicks; he eats the burnt food standing.
  3. The street — a vendor’s call; he looks, doesn’t buy.
  4. The bridge — the old woman who “drop something”; the first beam of light.
  5. The workplace — the compressor’s sound, and “nobody’s going to do anything about it.”
  6. The plaza — vast scale, beams of light, and the boy who won’t leave. Intermission.

Part Two — afternoon into night:

  1. The shop — “Same as the city.”
  2. The alley — “Nobody does at first.”
  3. The high walkway — “Clear day… for down here.”
  4. The apartment, evening — a neighbor’s faint radio.
  5. The apartment, night — the same bed, the same light. Fade to black.

Themes

  • Inertia — a life you could change any day, lived on autopilot instead.
  • Choice, not class — the way up is open to anyone; monotony keeps people down.
  • Near-connection — every exchange a near-miss.
  • The unresolved day — the meaning is left to the viewer.
